One man is dead and a little girl was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center this afternoon with undetermined injuries after the late model Ford Focus the man was driving and an Amtrak train collided about 4:30 p.m. at Highway 1 and Thornberry Road north of Guadalupe. There were no other people in the car, according to officials at the scene, and it was unclear exactly how the collision occurred.
The southbound train apparently came to a stop after striking the car, parts of which came to rest in a nearby field. The train remains stopped on the tracks near the wreckage, and it is unclear whether the train sustained damage.
Amtrak spokesperson Christina Leeds said that the train, a No. 11 Coast Starlight, left Seattle at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday and was scheduled to arrive in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. tonight. She said there were 132 passengers on board and there were no reported injuries as a result of the accident. It was unclear how long the train would be delayed, but Leeds said the collision is not affecting the schedule of other Amtrak trains in the area.
