A group of young Lompoc students honored U.S. veterans in the week leading up to Saturday’s Veterans Day holiday by creating an American flag out of unusual materials.

A group comprised of Fillmore Elementary School kindergarten through third-grade students constructed the Stars and Stripes banner on a fence in front of the Lompoc campus using red, white and blue plastic cups.

The students were from classes taught by Tania Jacobson and Charlene Asmussen, regularly meet once a week as part of a peace buddies program, Asmussen said.

“It was a collaborative project that took a lot of patience and teamwork,” she said of the flag display. “We are hoping it remains for a while in the front of our school and is a nice image for our school and community to enjoy.”

Fillmore Elementary School is located at 1211 E. Pine Ave.
