A 62-year-old Santa Maria man was killed and a 31-year-old Santa Maria woman was injured in a single-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon on the San Marcos Pass section of Highway 154 west of Salvar Road.

The identity of the driver, who died as a result of the collision, was not immediately released by the California Highway Patrol pending notification of his next of kin. Amber Cave, the passenger, reportedly sustained only minor injuries.

The incident occurred around 4:45 p.m. Saturday. The two occupants were riding in a Honda Civic eastbound toward Santa Barbara. The car allegedly swerved within the eastbound lane and, then, across the center of the highway and, then, back across the eastbound lane before running off the paved road edge, according to CHP. The driver was wearing a seat belt but still suffered fatal injuries, CHP reported.

The CHP, Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office, Santa Barbara Police Department, Santa Barbara County Fire Department and an American Medical Response ambulance responded to the collision scene.

Highway 154 was closed in both directions for about three hours while the CHP conducted the on-scene portion of the investigation. Eastbound traffic was routed off the highway at San Antonio Creek Road, and westbound traffic was routed off the highway at State Road 192 (Cathedral Oaks).

The collision remains under investigation, according to CHP.
