Santa Maria Police have arrested a 27-year-old Santa Maria man for possessing materials to make a destructive device or explosive in connection with an incident that occurred in July.

On July 18, at 11:32 a.m., police, along with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Bomb Squad, were dispatched to an alleyway behind the 300 block of West Betteravia Road for an explosion in a dumpster.

When officers arrived, they found minor damage to the area. No one was injured as a result of the blast, according to police officials.

Investigators recovered evidence at the scene to be examined by crime lab technicians.

Detectives arrested Jordan Peter Gerbich on Thursday without incident for allegedly being responsible for the July explosion.

“It was through the investigative process and waiting for latent prints to return and identify the responsible party,” Santa Maria Police Lt. Russ Mengel said of the arrest.

Gerbich was committed to the Santa Barbara County Jail.
