The Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office has filed felony DUI charges Wednesday against a suspected drunken driver who crashed into multiple vehicles in Santa Maria, sending five people to the hospital last weekend.
Sergio Chagolla Chagolla, 29, is charged with driving under the influence causing injury to multiple victims, and two counts of great bodily injury to two victims. He also faces a misdemeanor count of driving on a suspended/revoked license.
Chagolla Chagolla was arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Department 9, and entered not guilty pleas. The case was continued to June 7 in Department 8 for preliminary hearing setting, with a preliminary hearing date scheduled for June 14.
The defendant remains in custody with bail set at $200,000.
Shortly after midnight May 28, Santa Maria police were called to a vehicle crash at the intersection of Railroad Avenue and Donovan Road. Upon arrival, officers found two vehicles with major damages. Five people were taken to Marian Regional Medical Center. Lyvelyn Ordas Reyes, 57, of Santa Maria died as a result of her injuries, according to the Santa Maria Police Department.
Chagolla Chagolla was originally arrested and booked into custody on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony DUI.
