A bicyclist involved in a hit-and-run collision in northern Santa Maria on Saturday has died from his injuries, officials announced Tuesday.
The bicyclist has been identified as 74-year-old Armando Recendis-Alanis, of Santa Maria.
The suspect driver, Maria Augustina Abolino Lopez, 42, of Santa Maria, was arrested and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on felony hit-and-run charges with bail set at $50,000.
Lopez posted bail Sunday and has since been released from custody.
Shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to a report of a traffic collision near the intersection of Broadway and Williams. Upon arrival, units found Recendis-Alanis unconscious on the roadway. According to witnesses, Recendis-Alanis was riding his bicycle eastbound on Williams and was struck by a car traveling southbound on Broadway.
The driver, who later was identified as Lopez, fled the area and continued traveling southbound, according to the Santa Maria Police Department. Officers, along with the assistance of a witness, were able to locate the vehicle a short time later in a nearby neighborhood, but Lopez had fled the scene on foot.
At about 11:30 p.m. that evening, officers received information that the suspect driver had returned home and were able to apprehend Lopez.
Maria Augustina Abolino Lopez was identified under a different name by the Santa Maria Police Department. Her name has since been corrected to reflect the change.
