The Enos Ranch development saw its first line of customers Wednesday when Costco Wholesale opened its new 24-pump gas station.

The large membership-warehouse store made its gas pumps available to customers about a week before it plans to open the rest of its new operation in the highly anticipated mixed-use commercial development.

“We will officially close the old location at 4 p.m. on (Sept. 20),” said Assistant General Manager Roman Aguilar.

From 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Costco officials will open its entire store at Enos Ranch for a special preview.

“We want to give the community an opportunity to come and see what it is all about,” Aguilar said.

The next day, the large warehouse store will be open for regular business.

Aguilar said that Santa Maria’s new Costco is the only local store in the chain to have a gas station.

To purchase gasoline at Costco, customers must be a member of the wholesale club. Aguilar said information about membership is available at the new pumps and its current location.

The new Costco is located at 1700 S. Bradley Road; the current Costco, which opened in November of 1988, is at 1335 S. Bradley Road.

According Santa Maria city officials, talks are underway to find a new tenant or tenants for the current Costco building once it is vacant.

Costco is the first retailer in the development to welcome customers. City leaders said Lowe’s Home Improvement and Buffalo Wild Wings will come online next.

When complete, the development will feature Dick’s Sporting Goods, Chick-fil-A, car dealers and a more than 300-unit apartment complex. A portion of the property has also been set aside to be used as a public park.
