Winners of the 51st annual Beard-A-Reno were plucked from a field of 71 contestants Saturday night at the Santa Maria Elks Lodge.

Judging began promptly at 6:30 p.m. with winners of the whisker-growing contest picked for 12 categories including the longest, blackest, whitest, reddest and wildest. Others were named best all-around, best ongoing mustache, greatest goatee, top sideburns, best Western characterization along with most original and best attempt.

Besides earning bragging rights, each winner was awarded a custom-made silver belt buckle.

Clean-shaven contestants began their growth in February.

Ten women also entered the Miss Wrangler contest.

The Beard-A-Reno and Miss Wrangler contests are some of the events leading up to the 67th annual Santa Maria Elks Rodeo from June 3 through 6 at the Santa Maria Elks/Unocal Event Center.

Rodeo tickets are available at the Rodeo Office inside the Elks Lodge or by calling 925-4125.

Check back on Tuesday for a complete list of winners.
