Colorful sights, delicious smells and catchy tunes filled the air near the Veteran’s Community Center in Santa Maria on Sunday in celebration of Mexican Independence Day.

The Latino Business and Community Council and the City of Santa Maria sponsored the bicentennial Las Fiestas Patrias and Menudo Festival, which raises money for local student scholarships.

The free event included live music and entertainment from several bands, performances from folklorico dancers, games and authentic food.

Superior Court Judge Rogelio Flores was present for the traditional Independence Day ceremony, known as “Grito de Independencia.”

Meanwhile, Guadalupe also celebrated Las Fiestas Patrias, or “Patriotic Holidays,” with a parade down Guadalupe Street.
