Austin began her career in the DA's office in 1982 as a receptionist. In 1985, she was promoted to legal secretary and worked misdemeanor, felony and juvenile caseloads. She also was a witness coordinator, senior investigative assistant, acting supervisor and trial assistant. She retired as a senior legal office professional.

From 1988 to 1998, she served as a member and president on the Santa Maria Independent Living Environment (SMILE) board of directors (now known as OPTIONS), a nonprofit organization serving the independent living needs of developmentally disabled adults in the Santa Maria area. She became involved with SMILE operations because her sister with special needs began residing in a SMILE home in 1986, attends Vocational Training Center and participates in Special Olympics.

Austin plans to enjoy her retirement by traveling with her husband and spending quality time with her family and grandchildren.
