Katharine Edgerton Malins

Katharine Edgerton Malins, 59, of Santa Maria, CA, passed away on February 24, 2014, after a sudden onset of pneumonia.

Kathy was born in Pomona, CA, on July 29, 1954. She spent her childhood in Pomona, where she attended grade school, junior high school and Pomona High School, graduating in 1972.

Kathy then attended Mount San Antonio College for two years, graduating with honors. She moved on to Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA, graduating in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Pathology and Audiology, magna cum laude. She continued her education at Humboldt State, attaining a Master of Arts in Speech Pathology and Audiology in 1977.

Upon entering the workforce, Kathy achieved her Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology in January 1978. Her specialty was working with preschool-aged children. From 1978 through 1992, Kathy worked in the Los Angeles and San Bernardino county areas of California for the Placentia, Hacienda-La Puente and finally Ontario-Montclair School Districts. After getting married in 1991, she accompanied her husband, Jim, in a move across the country when he was transferred by the Air Force. Kathy spent eleven adventuresome years raising their two children in Grand Forks, ND. In 2001, she resumed working as a Speech-Language Pathologist for the Grand Forks Public School District. In 2003, Kathy and her family returned home to California, where she started her current job as a Preschool Speech/Language Specialist with the Santa Barbara County Education Office.

Kathy had a talent for relating to people. She was happiest at home surrounded by her family and she loved creating a nurturing atmosphere where her children could grow and learn. She had a warm heart, a beautiful smile and a calming voice that put anyone at ease. Kathy loved to cook, always astounding her family with her varied culinary creations. She was a loyal and loving wife, and her organizational capabilities were nothing short of incredible. Kathys family cherishes her dearly. The goodness and cheerful selflessness Kathy brought to the world are a worthy legacy we will strive to replicate.

Kathy is survived by her husband of 23 years, James J. Malins. She is also survived by their son, Kevin J. Malins, and daughter, Lisa K. Malins; her mother, Katharine A. Edgerton of Newport Beach, CA; her two brothers, George K. Edgerton of Houston, TX, and John E. Edgerton of Arroyo Grande, CA, and their respective families.

Kathy was preceded in death by her father, George L. Edgerton, formerly of Newport Beach, CA, and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Chester W. Malins and Helen T. Malins, formerly of Corpus Christi, TX.

A public memorial service to celebrate Kathys life will be held Saturday, March 8, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary.
