Joseph B. Cushaway age 63, passed away peacefully on Thursday November 30, 2017 from a rare form of cancer, Lieomyosarcoma. Joe was born September 18, 1954 In Flint Michigan.
Moving to Santa Maria when he was 5 years old. Joe attended Patterson Road School, Orcutt Jr. High and graduated from Ernest Righetti High in 1972. Joe was a hard and dedicated worker, putting his all into whatever he did. Joe worked in the Oil Fields most of his life. He worked at Standard Oil Co., Husky Oil Co., Timec, Tosco for turnarounds, Greka Energy, and Easter Rents.During his high school years Joe was an avid Moto Cross racer. He raced at the Santa Maria Speedway (before Spillway), Spillway Park, Saddleback Park and Indian Dunes he won many trophies and awards. Racing was his passion. He enjoyed Nascar and going to the track was especially fun. He was a huge fan of Jeff Gordon. Joe loved to watch football and went to an occasional A'sbaseball game with the family. Joe was meticulous at working on small engines, repairing many peoples mowers and blowers, among other items. He was always working on something. He even designed his own log splitter which he was very proud of. He cut Oak wood for the many Santa Maria Style BBQs with friends and family. He loved going camping and especially enjoyed going to Yosemite National Park. At home Joe enjoyed watching movies and could tell you about the different actors. Documentaries were interesting to him along with action films. He also loved his dogs, helping to raise and sell Irish Setter Puppies with Karin.
Joe had a special way of making his friends laugh. He had a huge heart and a very loving spirit! He will be greatly missed!
Joe is survived by his wife of more than 16 years, Karin. His daughter Samantha Cushaway, Stepchildren, whom he treated as his own, Tiffani Burger, Brandon Burger and Chelsea (John) Yznaga. Grandchildren Silas and Poppy were also special to him. Joe was preceded in death by his mother June E. Cushaway, His dad LeRoy J Cushaway Sr., aka Bob, His brother LeRoy J Cushaway Jr. his Grandparents, many Aunts, Uncles and cousins.
A Service for Joe will be held Saturday Dec. 9, 2017 noon at Coast Valley Worship Center, 2548 South Broadway, Santa Maria, CA.
A Celebration of Joe's life will be at Patricios Pizza 156 S. Broadway in Old Orcutt, CA 1 to 4pm
