This past month I lost a dear friend, Gary House. Gary was promoted to heaven on Sept. 22, 2017. Gary and I grew up playing baseball on the sandlots of the Santa Maria Valley. I met Gary when I was 13 years old and he was 12. My friend was one of a kind.
If you tried to define 'LOYALTY' in Webster's Dictionary, Gary House would be listed there. For the last 20 years, 'House Mouse' lived on the East coast in Martinsburg Virgina. At least once a year, Gary would make the trip out here with us, so that he could pick up oak wood so that he could cook his beloved tri-trip dinners.
Gary followed me from Babe Ruth to Ernest Righetti High School, then we played baseball together at Allan Hancock College. After Hancock, Coach John Osborne helped get me a scholarship from Cal Poly SLO. I went instead to Cal State Stanislaus and I took Gary with me after my first year.
At AHC, Coach John Osborne, Gary and I, with our friend, Dave Vosburg, won the 1972 State Championship, played in Santa Maria. Dave and Gary played a huge role, I went along for the ride!!! At Cal State Stanislaus, Gary, along with Dan Boar, and Coach Jim Bowen, won the Division 3 World Series two years in a row!
Gary House is gone now, that is why we are gathering here in Santa Maria on Oct. 14th to remember a dear friend and a brother. Love is not a strong enough word to describe my feelings for my friend. On every March 30th, we will hold the GARY HOUSE Memorial Golf Tournament to keep his memory alive.
