On August 22, 1927, Barry Ivan Dolan was born in Salinas, California to Jean Bennett Holt Dolan and Peter Dolan, who was the son of Irish immigrant, Philip Dolan, an original homesteader of the Big Sur and Salinas Valley. He attended Salinas Valley schools, and graduated from Salinas High School in spring of 1944. Barry joined the Merchant Marines and completed three tours from 1944 to 1946; traveling to Guam and other ports of call. At the end of the war, he was “stranded” in New York for weeks because of a dockworkers' strike. He returned home to California to marry his high school sweetheart, Yvonne Happ, on March 18, 1947. Barry began his career with Pacific Gas & Electric and the young couple started their family at the historic Boronda Adobe in Salinas, CA, where Dennis, Timothy, and Patrick were born in quick succession. In 1955, the family transferred to Santa Maria where Barry learned the ropes as an estimating engineer with PG&E. He worked for PG&E until his retirement in 1986. Over the years, Barry was very involved with St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed spending time with his many friends and coworkers in the Santa Maria Valley. He passed peacefully at Marian Extended Care on Tuesday, November 7, 2017.
Barry's pride and happiness came from his relationship with God and his family. Barry was a stern disciplinarian, teaching his sons right from wrong and to have a solid work ethic. “Stern” is not the term his grandchildren or great-grandchildren would use to describe “Papa Barry.” From taking grandkids to church (with breakfast or donuts afterwards), telling ghost stories during sleepovers, to trips to Waller Park feeding the ducks, he was a central figure in our lives. His generosity, not only to his family, but to friends, neighbors and his church was legendary. Our most dearly held memories are holiday gatherings at the Far Western, our annual PCPA Christmas show (Dolan – Party of 30), and many summer vacations at Bass Lake. Barry was an avid gardener with a true “green thumb.” He also enjoyed antiques, cars, and Dodger baseball.
Barry is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick (Kerry) Dolan and Timothy (Mardelle) all of Santa Maria; his grandchildren Amy (Gaby) Dolan-Asistin, Brett (Crystal) Dolan, Patrick (Kimberly) Dolan, Jennifer Dolan (Curt Greeley) all of Santa Maria and Matt (Lizette) Dolan of Walnut Creek, California. For the last 22 years, he has enjoyed spending time with his 13 great-grandchildren plus many others' kids and grandkids of our extended family who affectionately called him “Papa.” He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Joan & Jerry Brannon of Salinas, and his nephew Gary Brannan. Barry was preceded in death by his wife of almost 50 years, Yvonne Happ Dolan, his parents, his sister, Barbara Holt Sorenson, his second wife, Mary Porfiri, and his son, Dennis of Bass Lake.
The family thanks everyone for their support, prayers, and kindness over the years, particularly those who helped in his care and comfort in the past few years. A rosary will be held at Magner Maloney Funeral Home at 6:00pm on Tuesday, November 21st. A funeral mass will be held at St. Louis De Montfort Catholic Church at 10:00am on Wednesday, November 22nd with reception to follow at the Santa Maria Country Club.
