What a glorious day to enter heaven - Barbara Smith passed away on Good Friday, March 30, 2018 in Santa Maria. She was born Barbara Lou Wilcoxon on November 9, 1938 in Shafter, CA to Rev. Sam & Alice Wilcoxon the 10th of 11 children.
Barbara graduated from Shafter High School in 1956, then went on to graduate from the first Nursing class at Bakersfield College in 1959. She would work as a floor nurse for the next 20 years at local hospitals before retiring from nursing around 1980. She changed her career path the next five years by working at Gulf Oil in their geology department before permanently retiring to enjoy her family and grandchildren.
Barbara married Gordon B. Smith on May 13, 1961 in Las Vegas, NV and three children QUICKLY followed. Her faith in God was strong and steadfast; Barbara and Gordon raised their family and she lived her life with Jesus as their guide. She was active in her local church until her health forbid her from attending. She especially enjoyed singing in the choir and she was not afraid to share her thoughts with God on a daily basis.
Barbara is survived by her husband of almost 57 years, Gordon; children Stefanie (Eric) Hassett, Adam (Judith),and Michael; grandchildren Alex Hassett, Amy (Bradford) Smith and Scott Cenkar; great-granddaughter Ember Cenkar and her sister Betty Wilcoxon. She was predeceased by her nine siblings and beloved grandson, Ian Hassett.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 27, 2018 at 1pm in the Chapel at Grace Baptist Church located at 605 E. McCoy Lane, Santa Maria, CA.
