The Santa Maria Civic Theatre kicks off its 59th season Aug. 11 with the Broadway musical “Hairspray,” based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters. Kyle Hawkins is directing.

Written by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, with music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the musical "Hairspray" is the winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It's a family-friendly musical, piled bouffant high with laughter, romance and deliriously tuneful songs.

The 1950s are out, and change is in the air!

It's 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire -- to dance on the popular "Corny Collins Show." When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin and integrate a TV network. All without denting her 'do!

Performances will be Aug. 11 through 13, 18 through 20 and 25 through 27 at the Santa Maria Civic Theatre, located at 1660 McClelland St. in Santa Maria. Showtimes are Friday and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 1:30 p.m.
