Treads on Threads clothing company in Santa Ynez Valley recently announced the launch of Tread Lightly, its first main collection of items with designs created by using old motorcycle tires.
Artist Robbie Kaye drew on her early motorcycling experiences to create her “moto-lifestyle” company that produces T-shirts, hoodies, leggings and clothes for babies and children as well as tote bags decorated with motorcycle tread designs.
Kaye gathers retired bike tires from motorcycle shops, applies acrylic paints to the treads, then uses them to created designs that range from a simple white or black treadmark across a shirt to an image of the Earth to a heart shape on clothes for kids.
She also uses the tires to create paintings that are currently on exhibit at Honey Paper in Los Olivos.
“As I produce each design, I wonder … where has this tire traveled?” Kaye said. “I imagine somewhere beautiful — an exhilarating ride, then I feel exhilarated as I imprint my own life (onto the clothing) with this evolving adventure.”
She said her eco-centered lifestyle brand encourages adventurers to explore and “tread lightly.”
