The First Bank branch in Solvang joined others throughout the state to collect food and cash donations over a two-week period in July to help feed needy families, a bank spokesman said.

Nonperishable food items collected by the Solvang branch were forwarded to Santa Ynez Valley People Helping People for distribution through its Basic Needs program.

Monetary donations were also passed along to PHP to purchase additional food for the program to help feed families with children during the summer months.

“There are so many children and families that are at risk for hunger, particularly during the summer months because children are not being fed in school,” said Susan Montoya, senior vice president and corporate Community Reinvestment Act officer for First Bank, who thanked employees for participating in the food drive.

Foodbank of Santa Barbara County was among the other recipients of donations collected by First Bank branches.

The total amount of food and funds collected by the Solvang branch was not available, but statewide, the bank’s branches collected 5,081 food items and $6,421 in cash donations for a total value of $11,502.
