Kids between 7 and 15 years old are invited to join local anglers to learn their skills - knot-tying, casting, rigging for trout, crappie, bluegill, bass and catfish, and secrets of saltwater fishing - Saturday, July 19, or Saturday, Aug. 23, at Cachuma Lake Nature Center.
The half-day workshops, the fifth annual version of Cachuma's Kids' Fishing Workshops, are held on the lawn at Cachuma Lake Nature Center from 8:45 a.m. until approximately noon.
There is no charge to participate except for a park entry fee of $8 per car. Each workshop is limited to 50 entrants, but plenty of space is still available.
Santa Barbara County Fish and Game Commission underwrites these classes, and each child will receive a bag of fishing supplies at the end of the morning.
Neal Taylor, noted local flyfisherman and host for the events, invites parents to listen in to the presentations if they wish to do so.
The Nature Center is open noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays, free of charge.
The center emphasizes exhibits on the local watershed. Many are hands-on displays, suitable for children of all ages and adults. Volunteer are always needed in a variety of roles.
